Modern people think protesting and resisting is a right, and is good. Is it?
I was reading a passage just today 2 Samuel 16:5-6 :
“When King David came to Bahurim, there came out a man of the family of the house of Saul, whose name was Shimei, the son of Gera, and as he came he cursed continually. And he threw stones at David and at all the servants of King David, and all the people and all the mighty men were on his right hand and on his left.”
2 Samuel 16:5-6 ESV
This always gives me pause: be careful when and to what you throw stones. You never know when it will return back on your head.
If you read a little further through the Biblical narrative, when Solomon was King, it was poured back onto Shimei’s head when he left Jerusalem to search for a servant. Solomon had ordered Shimei to never leave Jerusalem again in order to keep his life, hardening back to the events in this very passage.
Who knows why King David didn’t address it in his lifetime, but I am just following the narrative.
Bringing this to modern day application, I think of modern politics. I seriously had very little love for the policies nor mannerisms of Barack Obama – bordering on the offensive at times at his deference to foreign dictators. But I never threw, nor would I throw, stones. He was the Lord’s annointed:
“But David said to Abishai, “Do not destroy him, for who can put out his hand against the Lord ‘s anointed and be guiltless?””
1 Samuel 26:9 ESV
Consider all of the riots and street burning that happened during Obama’s time in office. There was some of that but it was targetted against those to whom Obama opposed (specificlaly Police or “Tea Baggers” as he affectionally called his opposition.)
Consider the opposition (riots and street burning) that exists against Donald Trump. It’s not just rhetorical. People have been marching causing violent damage. Bone-headed celebreties like Madonna, Johnny Depp, or Ashley Judd wanting to blow up the White House, kill the president, or screaming ‘I’m a “naaaaaasty” woman!’ All of this because they didn’t like an election result. As an aside, Ashly Judd is a pretty lady, but her dark heart makes her very unattractive.
In part some of this is artificially stoked by powerful forces like George Soros, funding these riots/rebels to his own gain. (It is well know he enriches himself by destabilizing markets and shaking them to their core so he can buy low and make more cash on the way back up.). Even he has a form of stone throwing himself.
But all of this rioting, I consider how it will eventually be returned back on the heads of those actually causing the ruckus. We live in a worked that is descending further into darkness, and it may take years for the whole narrative to unfold, but do not be deceived, God will not be mocked. Satan may be the prince of the power of the air, but this is still God’s world. His creation. He has an expectation for us and our behavior. Scripture tells us all things hold together through Christ, and if it is He who is making our hearts beat, how long will he tolerate giving the gift of life to those in utter rebellion to Him and to His offered peace?
Billy Joel sang (a rather snappy tune I must say) : “Only the Good die Young”
God promises our obedience to Him, He will lengthen our days. Now this is in his good will of course. I’ve known even righteous people who have died early. I suspect more as a gift to them to get them out of here into Jesus’ presence where there is no more sorrow.
“My son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments, for length of days and years of life and peace they will add to you. Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you; bind them around your neck; write them on the tablet of your heart. So you will find favor and good success in the sight of God and man.”
Proverbs 3:1-4 ESV
I encourage everyone to do more than a double-take before throwing that stone – especially to ones in authority over us.
