Demons are Scary. God is the Scariest.

So it’s Friday night and I come home after being out with the family to watch the Travel Channel’s “Ghost” show lineup: “Ghost Adventures” and “The Dead files”.  I always come away with a response in my heart like this: Demons are Scary. God is Scarier/Scariest.

(There is an edifying point to this so stick with me.)

Ghost Adventures:  Zak, Nick and Aaron head to San Antonio, TX, to investigate the 150-year-old Black Swan Inn (Website description)

Basically this is a house sitting on top of an old Mexican/Texas battle over 100 years ago. There are “ghosts” wandering the mansion and visiting / freaking out the modern dwellers. Zak Nick and Aaron setup shop to capture evidence of paranormal activity using cameras, EVPs, Voice Boxes, Infrared Scanners, etc. (on night walks – of course.) Quite entertaining – when they actually have enough evidence so as not to spend 15 minutes of the crew playing soccer or throwing dried horse manure at each other (DVR Scan Scan Scan past that!)

Zak Bagins tells a little kid at the beginning – “Maybe we can get them to leave” (paraphrased.)  I always laugh when these ghost chasing gurus make these claims. More on that to following.

The Dead FilesAmy and Steve investigate Santa Fe’s abandoned and infamous New Mexico State Penitentiary. Steve interviews frightened eyewitnesses and discovers the location’s bloodstained secrets while Amy confronts a murderous evil entity  (from the Travel Channel Website)

So Amy Allen (sp?) is the Spirit Walker who (stupidly) opens herself up to the Spirit (Demon) world – walking properties in the dark looking at what the demons will reveal to her.  This enables her to see “dead people.” ( Again, I refer to these as demons.)
Her partner Steve, a retired NYPD investigates the subject hotspot using standard “dig-deep” tactics: talking to people, looking at City Hall records, going to the Library, etc.  They come together at the end of the of their investigation/walk to reveal their findings – which usually jive with one another. Very uncanny.

Tonight’s episode was a lady freaked out by dark paranormal activity invading her life after filming a movie in this old prison.  As results are revealed to her she begins crying for fear.  Amy’s recommendation to make the demons go away: hire a witch doctor.  WHAT! Let’s read that again: “Hire a witch doctor.”

Hire a witch doctor? Zak himself will help make the demons go away?  Is it possible that demons (ghosts, blah blah) will pay attention to the efforts of any mortal man?  Does man have at his disposal any real earthly (or horizontal) means of dealing with demons (a.k.a Ghosts?)  In the order of questions above: No, No, No, Yes.

  • Garlic, chants, books, incense, animal sacrifice, latest technology: NO.
  • Jesus Christ, King of King Lord of Lords God in human flesh: YES.

The most glaringly missing  component from these shows is calling upon God himself. I really want to reach out to those kids and their father in Ghost Adventures, and also the lady in The Dead Files and let them know there is relief to be had.  The incredible news is the cavalry is only a heartbeat and a humble prayer away.  God himself. God created the Spirit world, and oh, by the way …  John 4:24 (ESV) 24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”   {Jesus’ words in red. 🙂 }

You see, Satan has no power over anyone unless God allows it:

  • Notice Satan needs permission from God to inflict Job
    Job 1:12 (NIV)
12 The LORD said to Satan, “Very well, then, everything he (Job) has is in your hands, but on the man himself do not lay a finger.” Then Satan went out from the presence of the LORD. (and made Job’s life miserable.)
  • Notice the LORD (Yahweh) rebukes Satan from laying a finger on this man Joshua
    Zechariah 3:1-2 (NIV)
1 Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, and Satan standing at his right side to accuse him. 2 The LORD said to Satan, “The LORD rebuke you, Satan! The LORD, who has chosen Jerusalem, rebuke you! Is not this man a burning stick snatched from the fire?”
  • Jesus Commands an evil Spirit out of a man
    Luke 8:29-31 (NIV)
29 For Jesus had commanded the evil spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was chained hand and foot and kept under guard, he had broken his chains and had been driven by the demon into solitary places.  30 Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” “Legion,” he replied, because many demons had gone into him. 31 And they begged him repeatedly not to order them to go into the Abyss.
  • There are “angels” bound at the Great River Euphrates, waiting to be unleashed at a future hour
    Revelation 9:13-15 (NIV)
13 The sixth angel sounded his trumpet, and I heard a voice coming from the horns of the golden altar that is before God. 14 It said to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates.” 15 And the four angels who had been kept ready for this very hour and day and month and year were released to kill a third of mankind.

So is it possible to get a demon infected home cleansed?  Well, yes. Lord willing. But my message to these people is, as Mac Powell of Third Day sang:“Cry out to Jesus.”

And don’t mistake Jesus as a puppet on strings, or a magic genie for your comfort. He is the fearsome awesome God that brought 10 horrible plagues upon Egypt during Moses’ time.  He is the scary God at the end of Isaiah 66:21-24, who established the righteous in the new Jerusalem, and condemns the dead bodies of those who rebelled against him to a pit of a living, everlasting death – loathsome to all mankind.

  • James 2:19 (ESV) 19 You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder!
  • Hebrews 12:28-29 (ESV) 28 Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe,29 for our God is a consuming fire.

If you haven’t gotten the point of this post, let me state it again: Demons are scary, and NOT to be messed with.  But God Himself is even more scary. And He wants to welcome us with open arms. We must first fall on our face before him and repent of our sins.

If you have the Spirit world screwing around in your home, call on that same God to address the problem.  He is even scarier.

Last thoughts:

Anyone thinking they are communicating with a dead person from the past – Ghost Adventures and Dead Files included – keep in mind the following passage:

2 Corinthians 11:14 (NIV) 14 And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.

Satan is the father of lies (as Jesus Said,) and He will do everything in His power to get you to believe in something other than the truth. These “ghosts” are demons, lying to the camera, lying to the hosts, and obviously lying to us the audience (see John 8:44.) Satan will become whatever he can, say anything he can, to derail you from the truth of the Gospel, to his lies.

Be sober and alert, you enemy goes about like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.
