Matthew 4:4 (ESV) 4 But he [Jesus] answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
I must admit there are days I am utterly starving myself – Spiritually. For some reason I allow myself to be distracted to what I would classify as “The Urgent“, ignoring what can be classified as “The Important.”
We don’t recognize this condition (if at all) until we are faced with a trial or situations that cause us to respond. Or maybe it’s the “out of control” spiral we can find our lives. We look back at the roots of a situation and wonder – how’d that happen!? If it’s a chain reaction caused by our own dumb decision making, you need a fill up on nutrition from above.
So I am rather behind on my Bible in a year (affectionately named DBR – Daily Bible Reading – by my dear Pastor Jon) so I am playing catch up a tad. Here it is a late night packed with rather important matters to address. I am ready to crash and get my five hours of sleep. I recognized my need to place God’s word first.
His word is always competing with other things in my life: work, family, television, Drudge Report, blah blah usual. If I don’t prioritize it, it doesn’t happen. So I gave myself a fill up tonight on Exodus and Matthew tonight. I may be going to bed later (and even later than that having blogged this part of that time) but I trust having a high saturation of God’s word coursing through my flesh, my responses, initiations, and every day things have a higher chance of being managed without sinning against God than otherwise.
So my encouragement to you tonight/today – do not make God’s Word second or even further down the list in your life. Make it first. Don’t starve yourself. Then watch Jesus transform your life.
